Transforming urban centres to smart cities: Integrating mobility, energy and Information Technologies in Lagos

Recent projections show that by 2050, half of the world population will reside in cities/urban areas, which means a significant increase in CO2-emissions per m2. The impending population increase has more side effects for cities in Africa and critically for Lagos. Currently, Lagos is the most populous city in Africa, serves as the commercial capital of Nigeria with a significant. Population growth and increasing urbanisation in Lagos has significantly outnumbered social infrastructure such as mobility and health, and has placed an increasing demand on energy, environmental and social resources. As of today, Lagos cannot meet its numerous municipal and industrial energy demands due to poor energy infrastructure. Also due to the geographical location of Lagos and its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, the state has been faced with climate change related threats such as air pollution, increase in temperature, storm surge, sea level rise and severe flooding — all of which have resulted into loss of lives and properties.
While these are current challenges confronting Lagos, future population growth would even pose bigger challenges. Studies project that by 2050, Nigeria will emerge as the third most populous nation in the world and half of these population will reside in major cities like Lagos. As result of the above, there is a need to provide a holistic approach via the development of a sustainably smart city that ensures the provision of clean and efficient energy systems, tackles issues relating to environment, waste management, mobility as well as health.
